St. Laurent is a wild cross between Pinot Noir and an unknown variety. Likely originating from France, it is now native to Burgenland. In the early 1980’s, Axel’s father Georg was among the first to focus on single varietal bottling of St. Laurent. The “Selection” St Laurent is sourced from vineyards of approximately 15 years cloned from the best of their old vines. With a warm and dry 2011 vintage, ripening was easily achieved resulting in big spicy aromatics balanced by an elegant weight and elegant texture. An earthy mix of sour cherries and black pepper, plenty of acid and a grippy structure – think Pinot Noir’s bolder and cheekier sister. Will pair wonderfully with venison, gamey veal/rabbit stews, mushrooms and practically anything topped with a Juniper sauce.
